On April 2, 2015, the Canadian Public Accountability Board (CPAB) released its Industry Insights – Retail, which is part of CPAB’s Industry Insight series for audit committees, and provides an overview of common areas of focus for an audit of a company operating in the retail industry.

The document notes the following common areas of audit focus in the retail industry:

  1. internal controls including information technology;
  2. supplier / vendor incentives, rebates and discounts;
  3. inventory; and
  4. impairment.
