Recently, blockchain technology, the underlying technology of bitcoin, has received a significant amount of media attention. With global companies and government organizations beginning to leverage this technology, it is reasonable to consider blockchain technology as having the same potential to be as disruptive as the Internet was in the 1990s. In 2016, for instance, over US $1.4 billion was invested in the blockchain space.
