The turning point: A Global Summary
Time is up, and we know it.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) latest report delivers the message we already know in our gut is true. Time is no longer running out. It’s up. Climate change is not just a scenario. It is the trend. And the case for climate action needs a new baseline. If emissions continue to rise and drive warming above 1.5°C, economic growth is unlikely to continue the baseline path baked into most economic analysis and decision making today. As the world warms, economic growth will likely slow.
Rapidly addressing climate change is a global economic imperative – with benefits to all. It's not just the global economy that benefits. The speed and contours of the transformation will vary by region, but nearly every country and sector gains through rapid decarbonization. And those most exposed to the economic damages of unchecked climate change, like Asia Pacific, also have the most to gain from embracing a low-emissions future.
The Turning Point report series shows that rapid climate action can significantly boost GDP in many parts of the world, accelerating growth and providing new employment opportunities – presenting a unifying and optimistic theme for humanity.
Achieving this transformation—an industrial revolution in just a few decades—is not easy. We must invest in coordinated, sequenced systems transformation across and within economies, led by an energy transition. But all good things require sacrifice and hard work.
The world needs to do the right things at the right times, focusing on early, impactful, and catalytic actions while also laying the groundwork for the solutions we know we’ll ultimately need in the future. We have the technologies, business models, and policy approaches to affect the transition. All we need is the will, today and in the years to come, to make the hard choices and commit to a low-carbon future and just transition for all.
