Employer's defined benefit obligation for cash balance plans (Phase 3)

The objective of this research project is to examine issues with measuring an employer’s defined benefit obligation for cash balance plans.

 

Meeting minutes

FASB discussions on Phase 3 of this project are found in the following meeting minutes:

  • July 30, 2014 — The Board held an education session to discuss issues regarding measurement of an employer's defined benefit obligation for cash balance plans.
  • January 29, 2014 — The Board removed the "Postretirement Benefit Obligations, Including Pensions" project from its agenda and initiated a research project on measuring an employer's defined benefit obligation for cash balance plans.

FASB discussions on Phase 2 of this project are found in the following meeting minutes:

  • October 29, 2008 — The Board finalized the disclosures about fair value measurements of plan assets, the effective date and transition guidance, and the application of the proposed FASB Staff Position (FSP) to private companies and not-for-profit organizations.
  • September 24, 2008The Board redeliberated FSP FAS 132(R)-a to finalize the disclosure about categories of plan assets and concentrations of risk in plan assets.
  • July 16, 2008 — The Board discussed feedback received for proposed FSP FAS 132(R)-a relating to the disclosures about categories of plan assets and concentrations of risk.
  • February 13, 2008 — The Board discussed how to improve disclosures of assets held in an employer’s defined benefit pension or other postretirement plan reported under Statement 132.
  • November 14, 2007 — The Board discussed whether to approve a partial deferral for the effective date of FASB 157 and whether to address certain implementation issues through the issuance of a FSP.
  • August 29, 2007 — The Board discussed how to proceed with the next phase of this project.

 

Current status

The FASB will consider whether to add this topic to its technical agenda during its meeting on August 13, 2014.
