The International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) has posted to its website an article by Professor Katherine Schipper and Professor Donna Street challenging other firms to follow the example set by Deloitte and and the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) in establishing the Deloitte IAAER Scholarship Programme.

Both professors are mentors in the programme currently sponsoring five associate professors from Brazil, Indonesia, Poland, Romania and South Africa. The authors report on the progress made by the young scholars and note the benefits of the programme that aims, in the long term, at supporting better accounting education and improving the quality of financial reporting and auditing. The article closes with an appeal:

Supporting five scholars is a good beginning, but far from a solution to the problems faced by the accounting profession in developing countries. When others see the progress of the five Deloitte IAAER Scholars, we hope they will want to be involved. IAAER mentors stand ready to work with additional promising, early-career scholars in emerging economies, but more sponsors are needed.
