The Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) has announced the establishment of a dedicated research centre to "ensure Australia can continue to be at the forefront of thought leadership in financial reporting". In addition, the AASB has announced the establishment of a complimentary 'directorate for standard-setting' which aims to take over the direction of the standard-setting activities of the AASB and enhance engagement with domestic, regional and international parties.

The AASB's press release outlines the following information on the research centre:

The Research Centre will undertake research in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, both domestically and internationally. The AASB expects that some of this research will be in response to requests from the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and some will be of its own initiative. The Centre will also contribute where needed to underpin decisions by the AASB on standards and regulatory impact studies.

The directorate will be lead by three newly promoted individuals:

  • Glenn Brady is to be Director – Australian Activities (currently on secondment to the IASB)
  • Nikole Gyles is to be Director – Technical Projects and Board Activities
  • Susan Lightfoot is to be Director – International Activities.

Both initiatives will be effective from 1 July 2013.  Click for AASB press release (link to AASB website).
