IAS 38 — Compliance costs for 'REACH'

Background

This IFRIC project was to consider how to account for costs incurred to comply with the requirements of the European Commission Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). The Regulation came into force in part on 1 June 2007, and was binding immediately on EU Member States.

Current status of the project

After many months of deliberations, IFRIC decided not to take this issue onto its agenda at its May 2009 meeting.  At that meeting, it was noted that the staff paper was very well written and provided excellent background for the issue of how to account for REACH costs. It was noted that REACH may be an issue for the educational division for producing guidance.
