Robert Bruce interviews — From headlines to trendlines: How integrated reporting is gathering pace

Published on: 15 Dec 2015

In this interview Robert Bruce catches up with Paul Druckman, Chief Executive of the International Integrated Reporting Council, to talk about the latest news on the development, implementation and experience of integrated reporting around the world.

He talks about the steady growth of integrated reporting from its early days as a new concept to its place now as it enters the mainstream. It has moved, he says, from ‘headlines to trendlines’. He talks about how it is now on business and government agendas around the world and how its growth and reach now stretch from Japan to Africa, and from the Netherlands to China, and about the many major businesses and companies around the world, and particularly in Asia, that have taken it on board. He talks about strengthening its place in the US. He warns about how sometimes the quality of reports is lagging behind their quantity. He also talks about what he sees as a fundamental change in thinking.

Until recently, he says, financial reporting was a central silo. Now it is still seen as the essential core but only as one piece of the whole organisational jigsaw. He discusses the new training programmes which are being rolled out, and how he is encouraged by the attitude of investors, and research which shows the beneficial effect of operating a system of integrated reporting.
