The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) (formerly BIS) is the department for economic growth. The department invests in skills and education to promote trade, boost innovation and help people to start and grow a business. BEIS also protects consumers and reduces the impact of regulation.

BEIS is a ministerial department supported by 41 agencies and public bodies. The Department is responsible for UK government policy on areas including:

  • Industrial strategy
  • Science, research and innovation
  • Energy and clean growth 
  • Climate change
